Getting Started

What music lessons are available in Wellington with Elyssa Vulpes Collective?

Elyssa Vulpes Collective offers one-on-one music tuition in voice, piano, guitar (acoustic and electric), bass, ukulele, violin, clarinet, saxophone, songwriting, music theory and performance, for beginners through to advanced students, based in Kelburn, Wellington.

Do you teach children, teenagers and adults?

Yes. Lessons are tailored to kids, teens and adults of all skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced musicians. Teachers adjust their approach depending on the student's age, goals and experience.

What age should my child start music lessons?

For piano, guitar, ukulele and violin, around 5 years old is an ideal starting age, since most children have the fine motor skills and attention span needed for a 30-minute lesson by then. Wind instruments such as clarinet and saxophone are usually best started slightly later, once lung capacity has developed. Adults can start at any age.

Which instrument should I or my child learn first?

Piano, guitar, voice and violin are the four most popular starting instruments. Piano is often recommended first because its layout makes music theory easy to visualise. Guitar suits students from about age 7 who want a versatile, portable instrument, with ukulele as a good smaller-handed alternative. Voice needs no equipment and suits anyone who loves to sing. Violin suits patient, detail-oriented students from about age 6. Ultimately, the instrument a student is most excited about is usually the one they'll practise, so personal interest matters as much as any guideline.

Do I need to own an instrument before my first lesson?

No. An instrument can usually be provided for your first demo lesson. Because regular home practice matters for progress, your teacher will help you choose an affordable option to rent or buy, such as a keyboard, digital piano or student guitar, within your first few weeks.

Are lessons one-on-one or in a group?

Most lessons are one-on-one. Two-on-one lessons are also available for duos, such as siblings or friends learning together, at a slightly higher combined rate.

Can I try a lesson before committing?

Yes. New students can book a half-price demo lesson to make sure the teacher and teaching style are the right fit before enrolling in ongoing lessons.

Costs & Payment

How much do music lessons cost in Wellington?

One-on-one lessons are $45 for 30 minutes or $90 for 60 minutes. Two-on-one lessons for duos are $55 for 30 minutes or $100 for 60 minutes. Rather than paying per term, students pay via a monthly rolling subscription: $180 per month covers four 30-minute lessons (or two 60-minute lessons), and $360 per month covers four 60-minute lessons.

Do I have to sign up for a full school term?

No. Lessons run on a monthly rolling subscription rather than a fixed school-term contract, and continue year-round, including school holidays. There's no long-term commitment — you can end your subscription at any time, with lessons continuing until the end of your current prepaid month.

What payment methods do you accept?

Monthly subscription fees are charged by debit or credit card through a secure Stripe customer portal. Bank transfers and cash are not accepted.

Scheduling & Lesson Policies

How long are music lessons?

Lessons are usually 30 or 60 minutes. Younger children and beginners typically start with 30-minute lessons, while older or more advanced students often move to 60-minute lessons. Vocal lessons are offered exclusively in 60-minute blocks to allow proper warm-up and vocal health.

How often do students have lessons?

Kids' lessons run weekly. Adult instrumental lessons can be weekly (30 or 60 minutes) or fortnightly (60 minutes only). Adult vocal lessons are 60 minutes, either weekly or fortnightly.

Are lessons held during the school holidays?

Yes. Unlike most Wellington music schools, lessons run continuously all year, including school holidays, Monday to Saturday between 3:30pm and 8pm. The school closes only for the Christmas/New Year break and a small number of public holidays. If you'd rather your child skip lessons during the holidays, you can use your allowed missed-lesson credits to do so without being charged.

What is the cancellation policy if I need to miss a lesson?

Cancellations need at least 24 hours' notice to avoid being charged. Students can miss up to 2 lessons per term (this includes school holidays) and up to 8 lessons per year without charge. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice, or beyond these limits, are charged as normal.

What happens if I'm going on holiday for a few weeks?

If you'll be away for 4 or more lessons in a row, let the school know at least 30 days in advance. You can take up to 8 lessons off per year without charge, and your regular time slot with your teacher will be held. If you need more time off than that, you can either risk losing your guaranteed slot or pay for the extra missed lessons to keep it reserved.

What if my teacher has to cancel a lesson?

The school will try to arrange a relief teacher first. If that isn't possible, you won't be charged for that lesson, and once cancelled lessons add up to a month's worth, your next subscription payment is paused until those credits are used.

What is the policy for severe weather?

The school stays open during a weather warning unless schools are officially closed under a red alert, in which case all lessons are automatically cancelled. For any other warning, your teacher will contact you to confirm whether you're attending, and the normal 24-hour cancellation notice still applies if you decide not to come.

Can I pause or cancel my lessons?

You can end your subscription at any time by giving notice; lessons continue until the end of your current prepaid month, after which the subscription isn't renewed. No refunds are given on payments already made. Pausing lessons for special circumstances needs to be discussed and approved by the school director.

Teaching Approach & Teachers

What makes your teaching approach different from a traditional music school?

Traditional music teaching was designed to produce players who read music accurately but often struggle to improvise or write their own songs. Elyssa Vulpes Collective focuses instead on fast, practical progress: learning to play and sing quickly, improvising confidently, and writing or personalising songs, while still supporting formal exam pathways such as ABRSM or Trinity for students who want them.

Do your teachers help students prepare for music exams like ABRSM or Trinity?

Yes. While the overall teaching philosophy favours creativity and improvisation over technique-only teaching, several teachers — including the violin and piano tutors — actively support students working toward ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall exam grades for those who want structured, goal-based progress.

What are the teachers' qualifications?

The teaching team includes qualified performing musicians with degrees and postgraduate study from institutions such as Victoria University of Wellington / New Zealand School of Music, Whitireia, and the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Turin, Italy, alongside real-world experience performing, composing and recording professionally.

Do you teach songwriting?

Yes. Songwriting is included as part of one-on-one tuition, and school director Elyssa Vulpes also runs a dedicated songwriting course through Wellington High School's community education programme, taking students from a song idea through to a finished, personal song.

Do you offer help with performance anxiety or stage fright?

Yes. Elyssa Vulpes is also a mindset, performance and confidence coach and hypnotherapist, running group courses, an online course, and one-on-one sessions specifically to help musicians and performers overcome performance anxiety.
