This is Day 1 of my 30-Days of Songwriting Challenge

I am excited to announce that I am beginning a songwriting challenge. Every day I shall dedicate at least 30 minutes to songwriting.

  • Today I went for a walk and listened to a podcast by Esther Perrel. Then I went home and wrote this poem inspired by one of her episodes.
  • The aim is creativity, not perfection. I don't know if this will ever turn into a song.
  • What does this make you think of? What images come to mind? What feelings are evoked in you?

A Ghost Like No Other

VERSE 1

What was her favourite colour? - she asks me - wide eyes

something in me recoils

dragging up through the mud and lies

I cough into the soil

PRE-CHORUS 1

The poet whispers - white - like the foam on her lips

'you look more like her each day'

I cling to her growing hips

then clench my fists and pray

CHORUS

She's a ghost, she's your mother

She's a ghost like no other

VERSE 2

How did you two meet? - she asks -  in wonder

A blade under my skin

flashes of the day I found her

ice cold, taintless, paper thin

PRE-CHORUS 2

The dreamer sings the song of the muse

before the unexpected breakdown

'don't try to walk in her shoes'

in the moonless night you'd drown

CHORUS

She's a ghost, she's your mother

She's a ghost like no other

VERSE 3

What's it like to have and to have not?

a fathomless refrain

like the quiet after a gunshot

in an endless wall of rain

PRE-CHORUS 3

The storyteller says - she was your downfall

you're captive in a void of questions

'why doesn't anyone call'?

how long does it take to learn this lesson?

CHORUS

She's a ghost, she's your mother

She's a ghost like no other
